In a previous article, I detailed a number of common problems faced when installing an aftermarket Bluetooth device to a helmet that was not intended for that model device. I also described the ease of installing a Hawk X1 Bluetooth system to a Hawk ST-1198 modular motorcycle helmet. Now, for the performance of the system, bottom-line, it far exceeded my expectations.
After being pleasantly surprised at the ease of installation of the Hawk Bluetooth system, I was hopeful that the performance would be as impressive. It certainly was. A couple of friends and I performed road-tests on the system at speeds of up to 85mph.
With the helmet designed for the Bluetooth system, there is an area designed for the speakers to be installed, making them in the perfect location and not muffled below the lining, which made both listening to music and to incoming calls clear. The system also came with some Velcro extensions to make the speakers closer to a rider’s ears, which helps improve the clarity of music and incoming calls for all sizes and shapes of heads.
One of my concerns before I tested the helmet was the wind interfering with the quality of sound coming into and going out of the helmet, but the Hawk system has addressed the issue. There is a pad that goes underneath your chin that helps eliminate wind getting into the helmet and causing noise. Even going 85mph with my head tilted backwards to intentionally try and catch more wind, the clarity was excellent for a Bluetooth helmet.
To see how the Hawk Bluetooth system performed, we took turns wearing the Hawk helmet while playing music, using the intercom, and while on a call. We also communicated wearing another Bluetooth enabled motorcycle helmet as well as using a cell phone from home and while driving in a truck. All three of us were in agreement that everything sounded clear.
Next, as far as operating the Bluetooth system while riding, it was simple. The buttons to switch functions and to adjust the volume were simple to use even when wearing leather gloves. Answering a call was quick and easy, and subsequently very safe, with the quick push of a large button on the main unit. Voice activation was not only convenient, but it also helped from getting distracted.
With the ease of installation, clarity, and simplicity, the Hawk motorcycle helmet with Hawk Bluetooth bundle is excellent. When you factor in the very competitive price, the value is hard to beat.
