The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally at the foothills of the Black Mountains in South Dakota, just a stones throw away from Mount Rushmore, is one of the biggest motorcycle rallies held each year — typically taking place the first whole week of August.
While motorcycles and riders of all kinds are welcome, typically the rally is home to cruisers, with most of those being Harley-Davidson’s. There are also numerous custom motorcycles, street bikes and even some dirt bike racing and exhibitions.
One of the main events every year is the Harley-Davidson Sturgis Motorcycle Show, which showcases some of the company’s newest model-year bikes, well in advance of when they’ll appear on showroom floors. Some of the other can’t-miss events are the Black Hills Rally and Race, the annual Mayor’s ride, and of course there are more wet T-shirt contests than you can shake…well, a wet towel at.
Started in 1938, the “Black Hills Classic,” as it was originally called, was founded by Clarence “Pappy” Hoel, and began as a racing and rally event with just one main drag. Today, the rally welcomes motorcycle riders and enthusiasts from all 50 states and multiple countries as well, with anywhere between 400 and 800 thousand people in attendance. Taking over the entire downtown area of the city of Sturgis, South Dakota, the rally brings in more than 800 million dollars each year to the mid-western state.
The event is sponsored by numerous motorcycle companies, including most of the major motorcycle manufactures, as well as gear and equipment companies such as Bell, Xelement, Shoei and more. If there is anything made of leather, Gore-Tex, denim or chrome, you will be sure to find it at one of the thousands of vendors who set up shop along each and every one of the city’s streets.
Hotels, campgrounds and other accommodations in the area typically sell out up to a year in advance, so anyone interested in attending this or any of the other great rallies in the United States in 2013 should definitely consider looking for a place to stay now.
