The bike on the photo above is called Phantom 1903—MSRP $1,950, wide aluminium rims, springer front end, and a 50cc engine. It was built by Phantom Bikes, a San Diego company that has been building cool motorized bicycles since 2009. The president and owner of the company John Allen King says that he and a friend of his started by buying two stock bikes from local sport stores. They equipped the two bikes with engine kits they ordered online. All the bikes they currently offer through their website are beach cruisers—very popular style of bicycles here in California.
Phantom bikes have small engines, made in China, single speed, under 49 cc, capable of speeds up to 35 mph. You can get 140 per gallon with one of these. In some states including California, vehicles with under 49 cc engines can be ridden without a driver’s licence.
My only complain is: Why don’t they offer for sale on their website the best looking models? I’m talking about the custom built Phantom 1903.
