Many well-known custom bike builders took part in the 2011 World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Sturgis this year. But the big winner was Ken Tabata, an unknown builder from Japan who won the title 2011 World Champion of Custom Bike Building. Also check the 3 best modified Harley-Davidson motorcycles and the winning custom bikes in Production Manufacturer Class and Performance Custom Class in this year’s championship.
Freestyle Class 1st Place
Ken Tabata’s bike TAVAX2011V was the best in the championship and the best in the Freestyle class. The TAVAX2011V has aluminum bodywork. At its rear “the swingarm pivots from behind the rear cylinder, arching over the transmission, and carrying a linkage system operated single shock, a design similar to that found on many modern sports bikes.” Ken describes the TAVAX2011V as “a Cheetah about to pounce, all dynamic movement and power.”
Freestyle Class 2nd Place
Larry Houghton of UK-based Lamb Engineering won the second place with his bike Son of a Gun – a customized 1951 BSA Gold Star with single0-cylinder engine and Talon motocross wheels. Larry customized this bike using scrap materials from engineers. The result was a world-class bike built for less than $9,000.
Freestyle Class 3d Place
A bike has to have everything it needs and nothing it doesn’t. This is the motto of Satya Kraus, the owner of Kraus Motor Company that built Bolide, the bike that took third place in this class. The Bolide features 93ci S&S Shovelhead motor, telescopic forks, 17in Alpina spoked wheels and Metzeler sport bike tires.
