Over the last few years the Hollister rally has faced some challenges to make it happen. The 2009 Hollister Rally Canceled. If you go to http://www.horsepowerpromotions.com/HOLLISTER.html, you will see that apparently the City Council would not sanction the event.
An interesting move when you consider how much money the rally brings into the city. This is an especially interesting decision when the US economy is having so many problems.
Hollister is the birthplace of the biker image which inspired the movie the Wild Ones. Hopefully it will happen in 2010.

As the US economy slows down you will see rallies being canceled. For instance, the Honda Hoot rally has been canceled due to the slow economy.
Even if the economy stays the same as it is as of the end of January 2009 there are going to be fewer attendees. Not only because people are being laid off, but also because in this uncertain economy people tend to not spend as much money.

Hurricane Ike slammed into Galveston Island close to the date the Lone Star rally was scheduled to start. Although it was delayed, it was pretty amazing with the damage done to the city that they were able to still have the rally at a later date.
The rally in previous years had attracted an estimated 300K to 400K plus (depending on whose estimate you are looking at). In 2009, around 100K people braved the winter weather for the rally that was called the Rally to Rebuild.
There has been a number of issues between the rally promoters and the city which appeared to threaten the future of the rally being held in Galveston in future years, but apparently things were worked out and the 2009 rally will be held in Galveston.

In the first part of this entry I discussed different points about motorcycle shows. In this second part I note some of the variables at rallies. Again, these are broad generalizations, but they at least give new vendors some idea of the difference and certainly things to think about.
Huge differences between rallies:
Number of attendees
Demographics of attendees
Number of attendees that come to town that pay to get into the official rally grounds or that go to free rally grounds
Family friendly versus adult
American v twin versus touring
Attendees camp or stay in hotels
Vendor spots, indoor, outdoor covered, outdoor uncovered, grass, concrete, or dirt
Big name attractions or not
Number and type of vendors
In a town with things to do or a rally away from cities
These items are some of many things to think about. What are the attendees there for? What do they like? What products will they be interested in? Are they their to party, shop, see big attractions, or what? What will the vendor spots be like (important to know if you need to be prepared for rain)? Are there too many vendors and/or too many vendors selling the same products as you? Are people going to stay on the rally grounds for the entire weekend or just come for one day and enjoy the city or things to do in the area.
A lot of things to think about, but things new vendors need to really explore so they can make a profit at rallies.
